Agroforestry Roundtable Workshop

Related: Agriculture and Food Systems, Environment and Natural Resources

In May 2010, Meridian Institute staff facilitated an Agroforestry Roundtable Workshop in Washington, DC. The workshop was sponsored by the Interagency Agroforestry Team (IAT), which is comprised of representatives from six US Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies (the US Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Agricultural Research Service, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Farm Service Agency, and Office of Environmental Markets), along with the National Association of State Foresters and the National Association of Conservation Districts.

At the workshop, the IAT sought to gain input from a broad diversity of stakeholders on a National Strategic Framework for Agroforestry, to be developed by the IAT. Specifically, participants were asked to consider what the USDA’s future emphasis should be in agroforestry research, technology development, and technology transfer, both nationally and in priority regions and watersheds. The stakeholders in attendance included 84 individuals with interest in the science, practice, and application of agroforestry from universities/extension services; Tribal, conservation, and landowner organizations; industry; state agencies; and the USDA and other federal agencies. A meeting summary is available from Meridian by request.
