Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research CEO Workshop

Related: Agriculture and Food Security

In September 2005, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) hosted a meeting involving CEOs and other senior executives from agriculture-oriented multinational corporations, CGIAR center directors, and CGIAR central leadership. (The CGIAR is an alliance of 15 agricultural research centers around the world focused on reducing poverty and hunger and increasing human health and nutrition.) Meridian Institute staff facilitated the meeting.

At the meeting, participants:

  • Identified areas of common interest where the parties might explore collaborative opportunities
  • Discussed the visions, rules, and models of public-private engagement that will serve small producers in developing countries
  • Sought agreement on specific joint actions and timelines to accelerate solving the problem of how to better serve the smallholder producer

By the end of the meeting, the group identified several areas for potential collaboration and tasked key organizations with developing a specific proposal for short-, medium-, and long-term projects and activities that the CGIAR centers and private-sector partners could work on together. A summary of the meeting is available from Meridian Institute.
