On September 29-30, 2015, Meridian Institute facilitated a two-day meeting for Advanced Energy Economy (AEE), a trade association for advanced energy technology companies. Meridian and AEE convened representatives from AEE’s membership, including technology companies, State government representatives, academic experts, nationally recognized policy analysts and foundation representatives, to identify untapped opportunities to leverage existing federal statutes, to accelerate investment in and deployment of advanced energy technologies, to capture novel legislative ideas for accelerating deployment, and discuss ways to overcome key hurdles to seizing opportunities. Policy and regulatory topics discussed included transmission infrastructure, governance of Regional Transmission Organizations, key Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rules, mechanisms under the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, better access to energy use data to enable time-varying rates and other grid modernization opportunities, and advancing discussion about carbon emission pricing. The workshop resulted in a series of key actions in each of these areas to be advanced in the ensuing year’s run-up to the 2016 national elections.
