Currently, there is no practical, common-sense way for communities to assess and understand their strengths and vulnerabilities or gauge their resilience. With no understanding of their resilience, communities have little impetus to undertake the vital but daunting challenge of actively reducing risk. To address this need, Meridian Institute, along with the International Codes Council and the U.S. Resiliency Council, led the formation of the Alliance for National and Community Resilience (ANCR).

ANCR is a formally chartered 501c(3) whose mission is to provide practical, easily understood benchmarks for assessing resilience against which communities may measure themselves and identify their strengths and weaknesses. The benchmarks take into account all aspects of community resilience, including the economic, social, and built infrastructures.

To date, approximately 30 businesses and nongovernmental organizations have joined ANCR. Meridian is a founding Board Member of ANCR and has nominated Warren Edwards, a Meridian Senior Fellow, to serve as Meridian’s representative on the Board. Mr. Edwards currently serves as Chair of the ANCR Board.

In 2018, Meridian will serve as a primary interface between ANCR’s Technical Director and the subject matter experts assembled to review, recommend modifications to, provide additional information on, and validate the community resilience benchmarks developed by ANCR. In addition, Meridian continues to provide in-kind expertise on resilience and collaborative processes as well as meeting and other logistical support.
