Big Data Driven Agriculture: Advances, Challenges, Opportunities

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center engaged Meridian Institute to prepare for and facilitate the Symposium on Big Data Driven Agriculture: Advances, Challenges, Opportunities. The Symposium, held in February 2018 and funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), was designed to:

·         explore how large and comprehensive datasets on plant breeding, genomics, remote sensing, and analytics will benefit agriculture;

·         identify methods for creating a successful field phenotyping campaign, and determine protocols for the collection and analysis of agricultural big data and research engagement opportunities across the represented disciplines of plant breeding, machine learning, remote sensing, and big data infrastructure and analytics; and

·         identify cross-cutting, short- and long-term funding needs for continued success in these domains.

The outcomes from the Symposium included a white paper with suggestions to NIFA for future Requests for Applications and a report in The Plant Phenome Journal.
