Meridian Institute

Collaboration on Indicators for the Nation's Environment

Related: Environment and Natural Resources

In 2005, Meridian Institute facilitated an ad hoc, multi-stakeholder planning group that was led by staff of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). The planning group sought to foster the institutional capabilities needed to develop and report a comprehensive system of indicators and statistical data regarding the nation’s environment and natural resources. The process aimed to meet the nation’s needs for integrated, consistent data across jurisdictions and scales and over an extended period of time, thereby advancing more quickly our knowledge of ecosystems and human interactions with them. Participants included representatives of federal, state, tribal, and local governments, private industry, environmental groups, and the academic community, as well as information technology specialists. The project came to a close when the CEQ decided to develop indicators using an internal process rather than continuing to involve multiple stakeholders.
