Together with the Ecologic Institute, Meridian served as co-leader of Cooperation Across the Atlantic for Marine Governance Integration (CALAMAR). CALAMAR, which began in January 2010 and ended in June 2011, convened a diverse set of expert stakeholders from the European Union and the United States to discuss shared challenges relating to marine governance. Key project objectives were to:

  • strengthen networks by building strong alliances among key stakeholders
  • contribute policy recommendations that incorporate stakeholder perspectives on the integration of marine policies and more effective transatlantic cooperation

CALAMAR involved experts from government, industry, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and other key ocean stakeholders. Experts contributed through four multi-stakeholder working groups: integrated marine policies and tools; EU/US transatlantic cooperation; oceans and climate change; and high seas.

CALAMAR was funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for External Relations. The project team included the Ecologic Institute (EU), Meridian Institute (US), Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment (US), Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (EU); and University of Delaware Gerard J. Mangone Center for Marine Policy (US).
