Informal Stakeholder Workshop on the Multilateral System of the ITPGRFA

Related: Agriculture and Food Security, Environment and Natural Resources, Global Stability and Security, Science and Technology

In September 2014, Meridian Institute convened and facilitated a two-day informal workshop in Maccarese, Italy, at the headquarters of Bioversity International, to discuss implementation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).

The workshop provided an opportunity for those involved in conserving, using, improving, sharing, and commercializing products containing PGRFA to engage in informal discussion on the multilateral system, with the aim of contributing to the ongoing deliberations of the Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the Multilateral System. The 24 participants came from civil society; farmers organizations; the private sector; scientific organizations; and developed and developing countries. Each shared their individual and personal perspectives on a range of options to improve the functioning of the multilateral system.

Participants made use of a background context paper prepared by Bioversity International to help inform and organize the discussion. A summary of the proceedings is available from Meridian.
