Meridian Institute

Interfaith Rainforest Initiative

Related: Climate Change, Environment and Natural Resources

In June 2017, Meridian Institute facilitated the initial working session of the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative—an unprecedent coalition of Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Daoist, and indigenous leaders that convened to advance a shared priority to end deforestation worldwide. The Interfaith Rainforest Initiative meeting in Oslo, Norway marked the first time that religious leaders from across the faith community worked alongside indigenous peoples to urge action on rainforests and sustainable resource management. Members of the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative issued a joint statement confirming their commitment to rallying spiritual and religious communities worldwide to mobilize on issues of deforestation and climate change and voicing their support for future collaboration. This work and Meridian’s engagement was enabled by Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
