Meridian Institute

Public Health Leadership Initiative

Related: Health

In 2005 and 2006, Meridian Institute facilitated a three-meeting dialogue among approximately 20 public health leaders from throughout the United States, including representatives from the American Public Health Association, academia, public health departments, the Veterans Health Administration, the American Medical Association, and philanthropic foundations. Through the meetings, participants developed a consensus vision for a state-of-the-art public health system and new strategies and institutional arrangements to achieve public health goals in the 21st century.

The process was co-convened by Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and was funded by the RWJF. The written product of the dialogue—An Action Plan for Healthy People in Healthy Communities in the 21st Century—contains a vision, framework, and recommended strategies for how to achieve public health goals.
