SHIFT Summit

Related: Environment and Natural Resources, Resilience

Since 2014, Meridian Institute has supported the annual SHIFT Summits, which focus on the intersection of outdoor recreation and conservation with the aim of inspiring partnerships. Meridian assists with the design and facilitation of the SHIFT Summits, as well as logistics.

In 2015, the three-day SHIFT Summit brought together outdoor recreation enthusiasts, conservation advocates, and public land managers to explore opportunities and challenges at the heart of the outdoor recreation/conservation nexus. The Summit was an interactive forum with a mix of high-level panels, small group conversations, evening events, happy hours, and breakfast and lunch discourses. Discussions centered around three sub-themes: conservation leadership, outdoor access, and responsible recreation. The event launched the Principles for Advancing Outdoor Recreation and Conservation and the SHIFT Pledge. The latter is a set of six points that articulate a unified framework for natural allies to reduce internal conflict and increase success in the protection of public lands, waters, and wildlife.

Future SHIFT events will continue to build momentum for a coalition of stakeholders at the nexus of conservation and recreation.
