In 2007, the US Forest Service commissioned a study by the Pinchot Institute for Conservation regarding the potential use of forest certification schemes on national forest lands. After the study was published, the Forest Service engaged Meridian Institute to facilitate three multi-stakeholder meetings on the topic.

At the meetings, the agency sought to share information about the results of the study and seek input from diverse interests before making a decision about whether or not to pursue private, third-party certification of national forest lands. The stakeholder meetings were held in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, DC, from July through October 2008. Participants included representatives of environmental groups, the timber and wood products industries, and state agencies, among others.

Meeting summaries, and a copy of the 2007 study, are available at www.fs.fed.us/projects/forestcertification/index.shtml. To date, the Forest Service has not made a decision on whether to pursue private, third-party certification of national forest lands.
