World Wildlife Fund/US Department of Agriculture Transition Workshops

Related: Agriculture and Food Systems

Implementation of the 1996 Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) offered an opportunity for the US agriculture industry to accelerate the broad-based adoption of diversified and safer pest management systems that will lead to reduced reliance on high-risk pesticides. The World Wildlife Fund, Gerber Foods, Del Monte Foods, and the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association jointly convened two workshops among diverse interests to discuss these issues. Meridian Institute facilitated the workshops.

Participants included:

  • US Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Agriculture staff with special interest in transition issues in agriculture, FQPA implementation, and/or agro-environmental concerns
  • agricultural commodity groups dependent on pesticides vulnerable to FQPA regulation
  • additional stakeholders (such as consumer group representatives, Integrated Pest Management researchers, independent crop consultants, food retailers, food processors, etc.) with expertise and/or interest in transition issues in agriculture

Through these meetings, participants achieved consensus on a report entitled Critical Elements in Transitioning to Biologically Based Pest Management Systems.
