From “What” to “How”: Envisioning a Just Transition for Food Systems at COP16

13 November 2024

COP 16 – the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 16) — was held in Cali, Colombia, from October 21st to November 1st. Several Meridian team members were in attendance, focused on a just rural transition for food systems, as well as digital sequence information on genetic resources

Meridian brought important stakeholders to the table to move from the “what” and “why” of a just transition to the “how”. What exactly can actors in the system do to ensure the transition prioritizes farmers and puts resources and finances within reach? Alejo Maggini, Program Associate, investigated this at key sessions on this topic as a panelist and moderator.

At the session “Reforming Agricultural Policies and Public Support for People, Planet, and Prosperity” alongside WWF International, UN Development Programme, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Governments of Brazil, the UK, and Colombia. Alejo emphasized the importance of inclusive consultative processes with farmers, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women, and youth organizations.

At “From Harm to Harmony: Redefining Agricultural Subsidies for Biodiversity Conversation” — co-hosted by FAIRR Initiative, Biodiversity Finance Initiative, UN Development Programme, UN Environment Programme, PAGE, and the Government of Germany. The panel hosted individuals from across the food systems space representing farmers, investors, UN agencies, and governments. Focusing on the communities living and working at the frontlines of these food systems transformations, the panel discussed strategies and solutions that ensure benefits and protection for both people and nature.
