Meridian’s Frontline Community Delegation Speaks at UNCCD COP16

15 December 2024

Just over a year ago, Meridian’s Frontline Community Delegation attended and participated in COP28. Now, they’ve joined forces with our Meridian team as frontline representatives at the United Nation’s Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16). From Uganda, Australia and Brazil to Ecuador, Philippines and Poland (and more!), this diverse group offers rich perspectives on farming, soil health, agri-food systems and regenerative agriculture

Delegation members participated in all corners of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), including as panelists at the “High-Level Interactive Dialogue on Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Agri-food Systems”.

Esther Penunia, Alberto Broch, Sara Omi, Richard Kachungu, and Aissatou Oumarou were on the panel, each sharing their own perspectives on what must be done to maintain and manage land in a sustainable, healthy way.

“Young people are critical to achieving the Riyadh Action Agenda’s vision. These young people, especially those in rural and Indigenous communities, have knowledge focusing on long-term solutions. Therefore, it is imperative that investments are [put] towards them. It will allow us to be able to transition and scale [an] innovative, people-centered approach.” — Richard Kachungu

The Delegation remains dynamic and continues to grow. Learn more about this inspiring group of individuals committed to combatting climate change and accelerating food systems transformation.
