AGree: Transforming Food and Agriculture Policy
Meridian convened American “farm-to-fork” leaders, helping them map the policy changes needed to transform our domestic food system and support agricultural development abroad.
Focus Areas
Food Systems
The Challenge
- Federal agriculture policy can support and scale agricultural practices that improve farmers’ livelihoods, the economy, and the environment. Yet, partisan divides and lack of consensus often stall policy progress.
The Partners
- Farmers, companies, environmental and conservation NGOs, academics, and former U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Congressional staff.
The Outcome
- Bipartisan policy recommendations developed through AGree have been incorporated into the Farm Bill and advanced at USDA, leading to new programs and actions that directly benefit farmers.
AGree has become a thought leader in U.S. agriculture policy, producing research and developing roadmaps on timely issues such as climate change and data.
Project Overview
AGree tackles one of the most complex questions in agriculture: how to ensure we have enough healthy and nutritious food to feed a growing global population, while advancing positive outcomes for both farmers and the environment. For the last decade, AGree—housed at Meridian—has developed innovative and scalable policies and pilot programs that address these interconnected challenges.
We bring together leaders from food and agriculture, conservation, public health, nutrition, rural development—including producers, researchers, experts, academics, and policy makers—to:
- identify consensus- and evidence-based recommendations that advance farmer profitability and positive environmental outcomes,
- advocate for bipartisan federal policy recommendations, and
- conduct pilots to develop proofs of concept and build the evidence base.
By bridging divides, building trust, and facilitating solutions-driven dialogue, we have developed data-driven solutions that benefit farmers and the environment In the past decade. AGree has successfully advocated, for example, for conservation practices in the Farm Bill and at USDA to develop pilots to inform crop insurance product development.
